A sunday character design by tombancroft A sunday character design by tombancroft
One of the ones I'm doing today for a project....and, no, this is not Rapunzel. She'll have dark hair, so there. She's a bit of a pyro though....

The blue pencil you use, is it a prismacolor Col-erase? If so, how do you get it to show up so well, mine is always so faint.

Yep, the Col-Erase is right. I draw pretty heavy-handed, so its easy to have a dark line for me. Its a light blue shade too, which is different/darker than a non-photo blue. Maybe you should go a little darker, if its hard to see.

Great work as always. What tips can you give to us artists as far as drawing our characters from unique angles, like this worm's eye view you drew here?

Not really tips, its all about creating the right look using perspective. I guess that's the tip: apply perspective to your drawings, when needed.

Very nice, Tom !
I'm just curious, which brand of black pencil do you use ? Can't see it on the photo (it's a little blurred)...

I use different pencils all the time, but one of my favorite graphite pencils is this one, The Palomino Blackwing pencil. Based off the Blackwing pencil of the 40s that the Disney animators used to use. Its a soft graphite, but nice and dark line.

She is probably the most evil character you've drawn yet. Those eyes...

Tom, I really enjoy seeing your process and blue roughs. I'm always worried that my sketch work isn't readable enough because I don't have a steady pencil stroke, but seeing that you find your lines before committing is really awesome and helpful. Can't wait to get your new book! :)
