This is the second in a series of pics I discovered recently from my past....
This was from a National Cartoonist Society annual meeting in San Antonio around '99 or so. For the awards night, all the cartoonists wear tuxedos. Except the women-they wear dresses. (Ba-da-bump!) Anyway, this was my first one and I was nominated for "Best Animation" for Mushu the year Mulan came out. My brother and Tony met there and hung out with all these great comic strip guys we grew up idolizing- and some new ones too. The cool part was we sat with friend Jeff Smith (Bone) and Greg Evans (comic strip LuAnn). This photo is from afterwards when we were just sitting around and drawing pictures for each other. I'm on the left, then Greg Evans, Tony, and Jeff Smith is on the right. Behind us are other cartoonists who I don't know, but I know the gray haired one behind Tony is Mad magazine editor, Nick Meglin. What fun it was to just draw with each other! I will say, it seems Tony is getting all the attention here though! What's up with that?
BTW, I didn't win, but my Disney co-worker Ruben Aquino (Shang) did. Tony went up and accepted the award form him. Not sure how many people probably wondered if it was me pulling a Zoolander moment.
Awesome! I got to meet Jeff Smith in 2005 in this tiny little bookshop. He was doing a bit of Q&A of how he got into comics, which was pretty interesting to hear.
Anyway, this is a really great picture (and a great story to go with it)
So, just curious...did you and Tony independently decide to get into the same field? Did you both draw when you were younger? I've heard of twins who display similar aptitudes, but you guys are kind of unique. X)
We both loved cartooning and animation when we were kids and just started drawing together. Twins tend to be each others best friend (most of the time) because you are stuck together all the time. So, we just drew together. That stayed all threw high school and- ultimately- the rest of our lives, just seperately now. It is unique to some degree, but there are others.
Anyway, this is a really great picture (and a great story to go with it)
Awesome photos, BTW!
