I debated about putting this one up because its for a book project that hasn't been published but then two things happened: 1) I realized that it is scheduled to only come out in China, so most of you won't see it and 2) Sean "Cheeks" Galloway put his version up on his DA account (check it out here, its awesomeness: [link]). That made me a little braver, I guess.
At any rate, this was created for a book called "72" which, I believe, stands for the 72 different artists that were asked to contribute to it. All were asked to do their version of an image inspired by "The Monkey King" story/fable that is an ancient Chinese story. This was great fun to do and I had the honor of working with my good friend, Chuck Vollmer, on the color. He painted the thing and brought a ton to it. Chuck is a former Disney background painter and a great illustrator. It's digital painting, in case you are curious. I've already posted a few develpment sketches I did, so check those out too. AND do NOT say the dragon looks like MUSHU! I'm a hack, I know.....
Monkey King was the inspiration for Dragonball Z. Journey to the West has its main character, Wu Gokou, the monkey king, using a "power pole" and riding a "Nimbus" given to him by a an old Turtle hermit.
Son Goku, Ox King, Oolong, Muten Roshi, Princess Snake, and Krillin are all inspired by characters from Journey to the West. Bruce Cambpell (of Army of Darkness fame) starred in the Sci-Fi (SyFy) Channel adventure movie "Monkey King", where he played "Scholar from Above". The author of Journey to the West was being persecuted by an evil wizard who wanted to destroy all the writings of the author through censorship and intimidation. Princess Whitesnake (the inspiration for Snakeway's resident snake-themed princess in DBZ) takes Scholar from Above on a journey to a world without reading and culture in China (the sacred teachings of Confucious were banned by the Jade Emperor, the supreme censor and main villain). Conficious was a prisoner of the Jade Emperor, as well as the Author of Journey to the West. At the end of the story, Ox King, the Monkey King, and the pig guy were all granted immortality by being included in the Journey to the West story.
The dragon the monkey king fights in Journey to the West inspired Akira Toriyama to create Shenron/Shenlong, the drago who grants wishes on the 7 Dragonballs.
That settles it. I'll be watching the box set at dinner times again.
