This is the second of two Mushu Model sheets I did for Mulan that I'm posting. Actually, I did a few model sheets, but these two, plus the construction sheet (I've posted a pic of in my gallery) are the main ones. I did this one very early on in the film. It was for me and all the follow up animators and clean up folks to see the range of expressions for Mushu. The head turn at top was very useful. He's a little skinnier in the face then what I ended up doing in the film. The other thing I "lost" in production were those two front 'gap' teeth to give him a bit more Eddie Murphy look. I liked the idea of it, but Mushu has that mustache on his upper lip and it got too complex to have front teeth poking out also. Simplification won. I learned at the beginning of production that the Production Managers didn't HAVE to have the original art modelsheet, if you give them a color photocopy, no one could tell the difference. This is high res to download, I don't think I've seen this anywhere else on the net.
Just rewatched Mulan yesterday including the bonus material about creating the characters. The development process of story and characters never ceases to amaze me, already read a lot of stuff about it, to accompany my own practice. Still, just ordered your first book, I'm convinced that your advice is really worth something. I mean, you're the man who created Mushu *stands in awe* Thanks for sharing this on here, Mr. Bancroft, it shows the depth and comical quality that was put into Mushu!
Thank you for all the kind words about Mushu and his development. I appreciate them. Thanks for giving my first book a try also. Let me know what you thought of it when you get it. Post something online from wherever you bought it also, it always helps! Thanks!
I do know that there's a class at SCAD that uses Mushu as the primary example for assignments and such. I guess it's the shape and squash-and-stretch and follow-up animation that his ears and whiskers require. Many a time I have walked through the animation capture room and seen a little animation of him being worked on.
