Description

For those of you that like to see works in progress progressions (I kno wI do), here is one I put together for a Red Sonja image I did recently.

A. I started on the Cintiq with a very loose, rough sketch.
B. Still on the Cintiq, I put down a new layer and started redrawing it adding details, but trying not too loose the flow of the pose. Note: I moved her right arm up at this stage. (In hindsight, I'm not sure its that successful of a change, but I do like the overlap a bit. It does make it a bit more busy though.)
C. I don't ink digitally, or haven't tried it much, so at this point, I changed the linework to light blue and printed the light blue onto a page so I could ink it traditionally with Pitt Brush pens. If I'm smart at this stage, I will ink the things in the foreground first (like her hair strand) so I don't forget the overlapping lines and ink through something that's not supposed to be.
D. Just a further ink step. I still have details to add, but I'm starting to lock down some things like the change I made to the hilt of the sword. It was wonky, now it makes more sense. Also, you can't see it all here, but I lightly penciled in mountains and a moon behind her. I'm trying to add an interesting light source for color later.
E. Inks finished. I forgot to add the stars digitally at this pass, but my buddy Chuck Vollmer is coloring this for me and he'll add them. Thanks Chuck!

I'll post the color soon.
