WonderGirl_design sheet by tombancroft WonderGirl_design sheet by tombancroft
Ah, here she is again. Wonder Woman. BUT, this time, its a younger version of her- she's WonderGirl!

I know, there is a character by that name that is not Diana Prince. (Though, I admit, I'm not an authority on WW or her history, just stating that upfront.)

This is a quickie model sheet I put together for an idea I had to create a comic series for DC of Wonderwoman as a teen. The idea being that it would primarily revolve around her "training" years on the island and all the adventures that would happen there and near there. (There really would need to be a nearby island, in danger, that had men on it, huh?) At any rate, I mentioned it to my writer friend Jim Krueger and he was excited about doing it also. It went to the top (at the time, this was about 7 years ago) at DC and though they liked it, ditched it because they were going to do a WW movie and didn't want to mess with the character. (Still no movie!) I'd still love to do it if you are a DC editor. Think about it....

How do you bring in so much energy? It's uncanny. Do you work better with linear strokes or flowing lines?

Flowing shapes become flowing lines, that's my approach.

This would make a great kid friendly comic, too bad it didn't get off the ground. The concept sounds similar to what they let Ben Caldwell do with those illustrated WW kids books several years back.

Is this design based off of the original Wonder Woman of the 30's and 40's?

No, its my style with little to no costume reference, so I might have made some stuff up.

If only all Marvel characters we designed in this fun, lively style - I'd be very tempted to snap it up! Great stuff :)

Tom, I believe that today, with various styles of animation on TV, is much easier to get someone in DC who wants to see this animation in the air than seven years ago.

Hopefully the right! ;)

Great style!

She looks really cool!

You should draw her and other teen heroes together. Could be funny.

Very cool!
I recall they (DC) experimented recently with a "Sunday Funnies"-type format. They did a series of shorts on big newsprint for a few months. One of the features was a WW story that seemed to be an early-years take on the character and was illustrated by Ben Caldwell. I believe they called the project "Wednesday Funnies".
