Opinions are a Dangerous thing: Art StylesThis isn't about narking on anyone no, infact this is just my own muses really! You could say this is a journal for ENCOURAGEMENT! *SHINES*
I find sticking to one style restrictive if you are a beginning/moderate artist! (even professionals I might say! though I can't speak for everyone)
Having a distinctive look on how your art is done and produced is understandable and its a desire to appear unique to the point some one can just SEE your work and instantly think 'Oh! that's Ten-days!' or something along the line. However, when you are trying to find who you are and what kind of art you are to produce, I recommend trying, well, a lot of different things! Different styles, mixing styles, different colouring techinque, brushes, tools, shading. Don't feel dependant on what you are already doing and don't feel pressured by people just for trying new things!
Push out of your comfort zone. Can't draw hands? don't avoid it! draw the heck out of them! (how else are you going to learn?)

The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

Assignment #5: CLOSED- and thanks!

Whew.  It took me awhile, but I finally downloaded all 42 "assignment submissions" from you all here on DA for Assignment #5!  First of all, if you DID submit a drawing (either one, two, or all three poses) than I want you to know you are in a small, special group within my watchers here on DA!  I have over 6000 watchers now, and out of those 42 did this assignment- so we all know who the hard workers are around here, huh?  Okay, that's not fair, many of you probably couldn't do it for technical, time, or family reasons.  I totally understand that.  Also, many people here on DA watch people so they can do just that- Watch!  I understand that too.  I've seen contests here and been asked to take part in many things that I either had to turn down or just wasn't interested.  It happens.  That said, I think we all can agree these guys and gals that did put out the extra effort deserve some applause!  Good for you all and I thank you.

Back to business.  There are a TON of really nice drawings that were submitted, so now I have to go through them all and pick three (one for each pose, all by different artists) and then I will do my version of the assignment and provide notes for everyone to see.  These drawings and notes will end up going into my Character Mentor book that comes out in 2012 from Focal Press, so thanks to you all for your help!  I hope you feel its a win-win.  I know I do.

Also, I know, I know, I still have to give out my mentor notes/choices from the LAST assignment, which I am also working on.  (its the Tommy animated poses, if you have forgotten.)  So, I'm going back to work.  Nights and weekends are when this stuff happens- can't step on the day job!  Thanks all!

...Myself, due to unforeseeble circumstances, had to forfeit my partecipation on the #5 assignment. Was a busy week, unfortunately.

However, I'll try to do the last assignment you'll give. I wonder what'll be. Difficult, surely, but challenges helps more than simple practice, as we all know.
