Fear of discovery?

Wed Mar 6, 2013, 7:05 AM
This has been my mantra over the last couple years but didn't discover this quote till today:

"Obscurity is a far greater threat to authors and creative artists than piracy"- Tim O'Reilly, tech mogul

As artists/creators we are scared that people will steal our ideas/characters/IP, but we should fear never doing anything with them EVEN MORE!

  • Listening to: pandora
  • Reading: Invincible
  • Watching: Modern Family
  • Playing: by writing this journal
  • Eating: too, too much.
  • Drinking: afternoon coffee

Yes! I thought the same thing, it's great that others think so too!

Hear, Hear. You know how many times I've seen folks make personas and OC's to not do anything with them? Makes no sense to me.

Inspiring. I never thought about it like that before. I'm more certain than ever that I want to showcase my ideas in the online medium! Thanks for the quote!

o.o that's a thing? Really? Jeez, it's all I can do to NOT be completely unknown around here.

The piracy is something which us, the artists we must to live with it, and in some cases, take advantge of it, it's like the people who lives in the desert, there's many poisonous animals, they don't kill them, they learn to live with them and even, taking advantage of them...

Oh damn that's so true. It's not at all acceptable if someone uses your work to promote themselves or just say they made it, but it's a totally different thing if people don't even know your work actually exists.

Amen. I have to say this every single time someone comes to me asking for advice on how to deal with art thieves. An artist kills themselves when they just remove all of their work from the internet from the fear of having it stolen.

Just do your work and enjoy it. You didn't start the task because of other people. If you did, you're probably in the wrong field. It has to be something that continues no matter what happens in your life or around you.

Sometimes it's better to be ignored and continue to do what you love than to sell out and do nothing but pander to the masses. I had to learn this the hard way. Do what you love. It doesn't matter.

It's always good to have an idea so ridiculous and out there someone thinks it's too dumb to steal.

I guess, but the lesser of two evils is still evil.

Great observation.

I wouldn't say I'm "fearful of discovery" due to ideas being stole but more so "feared of discovery" due to the thought of not being able to compete with other artists in the industry. A couple of artist friends and family think I should give it a go but I always hold myself back due to the fear of not being "ready" or "properly prepared". Fear of sticking my neck out I guess? XD

I agree with you. I went to college, got a BFA in animation, and now I'm just scared of the unknown. I've applied at some places, but I got ignored or rejected and now I'm just unsure of myself. I have this idea in my head now that there's just too many guys who are more talented/ motivated than me who will get the jobs. Of course, I know it's all in my head, but it still holds me back. :-/

I hear yah pal! :) Since I've never went to school for art my fear comes from always wondering if I have the skill set or ability to survive in the industry. Stay strong though and don't give up! If you love what you're doing then it's worth fighting for! :)

People are rarely ever "properly prepared" for anything they do; it is only by doing something that you can make yourself "ready" to do it.

As for being scared of competition, you don't need to be. That doesn't mean you should completely ignore what others are doing, but ultimately they are just regular people who are working out of the same places and insecurities about their work as you are. (I liken this thought to be roughly equivalent to imagining people in their underwear; which is cheesy, yes, but it works to a point.)

also, I looked at your gallery briefly, you've got some amazing work to be proud of.

You make some very good points and LOL your comparison to people in underwear gave me a good laugh. But you are right you're never truly prepared for anything. Everything I learned in art was from teaching myself, I've never really had any interaction with any other artists in person so I always find myself questioning whether I'd be able to keep up with the pace of the industry. but then again that all goes back to that "properly prepared" thing we discussed.

And thanks man for stopping by my gallery! It's awesome that you took the time to stop by and pay such a nice compliment! :)

This is very true! You can't guard your ideas so defensively that you never share them. As an artist and storyteller I have to share my work, I can't stand to keep it sheltered away from everyone.

Very, very good observation!
