Check out this link charactersengage.com/, it has a new interview with me about why I made my new book Character Mentor, some early Disney stuff and how I got into character design as a career, etc.  The interviewer wisely chopped out a good chunk of the interview where I went off on a tear about my pet peeves about art schools today.   Seriously, I sound like a grumpy old man.  BUT, I do feel that art schools are not helping artists like they shou-- oops, there I go again.  Maybe I'll post a Journal about it someday....

PS>  In the interview, I announce a new product on my Charactermentorstudio.com site.  Check it out!
  • Listening to: pandora
  • Reading: Invincible
  • Watching: Modern Family
  • Playing: by writing this journal
  • Eating: too, too much.
  • Drinking: afternoon coffee

Do post a journal about art schools not helping artists like they should, knowing history/what-goes-on is edifying to know. o3o If you want. If you can, not sure if you can do that?

Cool. And you right about the art schools. My animation school hasn't helped me out one bit in finding work.

I read your interview... but it is true sir about how expensive are these art colleges and that too not providing the sufficient knowledge...
I have your book "Creating Characters With Personality" and have ordered for "Character Mentor" ...waiting for the book:-(
I am from India and I don't have any specific degree in art and animation but I am in the creative field for almost 8 yrs... though I am learning things at a very slow pace.
Whatever i have learnt it is on job and from few colleagues of mine...
I would really thank you as you have given a great opportunity to learn for budding animators through this initiative of yours.

Regards
Mumul

Personally, I'd like to see apprenticeships and mentorships make a comeback. REAL apprenticeships. I wish I could find something like this. Anyone need an apprentice???

Please post that and tell us your opinion. I'm currently in the Art Institute branch and its not as good as I thought it was gonna be. I do think your right.

Definitely interested in the rant. I didn't go to art school and it's probably for the best!

Nice interview, I'll be checking out the Character Mentor site after I read through the book! I'm expecting it in the mail this week. :)

I would really like to see a journal from you about colleges! The ones that are terrible and which few you might recommend.
Since I know most art schools out there are bad. and teach to the bottom kids, while not teaching anything at all to the kids that have an actual passion for art and excel above the others.

I'm rather curious about your opinion on art school...because I've been considering going to art school once I'm done with high school but I've heard bad things about it...so idk :c

Posting the rant would be helpful, as I'm going into school for animation later this year and i'd like to know what i should watch out for and what i should teach myself.

Tom, please post the rant. I agree most schools aren't doing any favours for their students except take their money.

So excited to get a copy of that book! I had a pretty small school and I was the only one there who wanted to get into animation, and I borrowed Creating Characters With Personality so often that my art teacher eventually gave me his copy! Learned a lot from it :)

I actually had a pretty good experience with art school, we had pretty small class sizes and some really awesome, dedicated instructors who would go over most of our work individually with us (that put a piece of paper down and draw over your drawing type thing you mentioned). So maybe there's still hope yet!

I never went to an art school. And from what I hear, it hasn't been all that good.

I do kinda want to go, but I'm just not sure it's worth it these days.

But I want to hear that rant, it's always interesting to hear old pro's (no offense intended) talk about where they see things going compared to where they were, either good or bad.
