Hey all.  I haven't posted a Journal in awhile.  Sorry.  I hope all is well on the DA homefront and at your home/studios also.  Every so often the writer part of me gets an idea that I just have to write down.  And share sometimes too.  I love artists and I love being one along with you.  So much so that I like to think about how we can grow in our journey's toward our career.  This story is about one of those life changing moments.   I hope you like it.

What’s your “Jerry Maguire” Moment?

By Tom Bancroft

As artists we can go through times of doubt, worry, and stress- all revolving around two things: Our ability and our future.  Both are strongly tied together.  Am I good enough to get ____ job?  Will people like this drawing I just posted?  Can I pay off this art school student loan?  And, ultimately: Will I be able to support my family with my art abilities?

With all of these concerns swirling in our heads, it can be hard to be creative.   The opposite of those things, joy and peace of mind, are the things that drive true creativity.  Its where we need to be to be at our best.  How do we get to that place?  Rediscovering the joy we once had- possibly everyday- for art and animation.  How we make that “rediscovery” may be different from person to person.

In the 90s film “Jerry Maguire”, Tom Cruise plays a high-end sports athlete agent.  At the beginning of the film, at a large sports agent convention, he wakes up in the middle of the night with an epiphany: he- and the entire sports as entertainment industry- have forgotten what was important: They should put the athletes- and even bigger picture- the GAME first.  Its not all about money and deals.  He has flashbacks of  his old mentor, Dicky Fox,  giving him age-old advice about loving what you do and the true meaning of life.   On a whim he decides to write a “mission statement” about how he and the other agents need to go back to their roots and rediscover what their industry should stand for.  It goes out far and wide and within one night Jerry Maguire is the laughing stock of the sports agent industry and is fired from his firm.  He starts his own sports agency, on a shoestring budget, and with only one loyal employee (Renee Zellweger) and represents the ONE athlete (Cuba Gooding Jr.) that still believes in him.  They are the underdogs but their belief in themselves and each other leads to success and a major turn in his life and his sports agency.

Have you had a “Jerry Maguire” moment?  That moment when you decide something that defines you and defines your future?  First of all, lets get this straight- you may have MANY “Jerry Maguire” moments in your life.  They can be huge, life changing, “pack your bags honey, we’re moving” kind of moments or they may just be a decision to believe in yourself enough to move forward on a project, instead of giving up.  Being aware of the important decisions and knowing who you are is key in making the most of those moments.

What goes into a “Jerry Maguire” moment?  The first element is deciding who you are.  What do you stand for?  How far will you go- or not go- for your career?  How far will you go for your dream job?   Will you honestly look at your ability and put the time into your art to get it where it needs to be to reach those dreams?  Even if it will take years?  Some decisions are made with much thought and time involved but many, we have to make quickly and those show who we are.  Just recently, I was driving my twin girls home from a cheerleading practice in the early evening and it was dark.  I came upon a fairly busy intersection and found that even though the light was green, there was a car in the middle of the intersection blocking me.  It was a woman, by herself in her car, frantically making a phone call.  As the cars drove around her, it became obvious her car was incapacitated and she was trying to call for help.  I went around her like everyone else but instantly thought I should do something.  She could be hit at any second and how would I feel having done nothing.  I pulled over, told my girls to stay in the car, and ran to the intersection.  I found the time to cross between cars and was able to push her car across the intersection and to the shoulder.  She was appreciative and my girls called me a hero.  All was great until we got home and they told my wife what happened.  She was glad I helped but reminded me how easily I could have been killed (it was dark and it was a busy intersection).  That kind of decision is made without much thought and in the heat of the moment.  Though I don’t regret it, I have thought about it since.  I could have been injured -or worse- and would I have regretted it then?   I don’t know.  I can say that “knowing who I am” played a lot into making that quick decision.  I was pretty sure I wasn’t the guy to pass by and do nothing (though I almost did).

Know who you are: stand for things.

Decisions are made by people that know what they want.  Lack of decision-making makes you a follower, because someone will decide for you.  Many times, there is nothing wrong with that as long as you’re okay with the decision made and you trust the person making it, but some decisions are yours and yours alone to make.  I am a follower in many situations because I trust someone to make it or it’s a decision I don’t have a strong opinion about.  For example, my wife does all of our check writing.  When we got married we discussed who was going to pay the bills and with her strong grasp of mathematics and thoroughness it was obvious it should be her.  When a major expense is needed to be made, though, I’m very involved on how we proceed.  We discuss all financial decisions above the day to day bills so not one of us is to blame for a poor decision.   It may sound obvious, but every small or major decision in your life- and how you make it or don’t- defines who you are.  The point here is don’t think that others will make your major life decisions for you.  You need to make those.  When it comes to your art and your career, you have to drive those decisions and live with the consequences.

There have been a few times in my life where I can say I was in attendance or witnessed a “Jerry Maquire” moment someone made.  It may sound funny, but one that comes to mind involves Michael Jackson.  It was 1983 and my family watched the Motown 25th Anniversary show (youtu.be/MTZNAKUdeSQ)  on TV.  It which was going to feature the Jackson 5 singing a medley of their hits.  The world hadn’t seen the Jackson 5 in awhile and the crowd went crazy seeing them all together again as adults.  But, the “Jerry Maguire” moment came when the now all grown up Michael Jackson broke into his just released “Billie Jean” solo song (along with the first time he did the “moon walk” on stage) that the crowd- and the world- discovered the future King Of Pop.  That defining moment changed his life and the worlds’ in many ways.

A second example of “I was there when” moments is lesser known but had a worldwide effect for an unexpected Rick Santelli.  Rick was a commentator on the business news network CNBC and during a live feed, he referenced the Boston Tea Party in his response to Pres. Barack Obama’s mortgage relief plan. Speaking from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Santelli heatedly stated that the bailout would “subsidize the losers’ mortgages” and proposed a Chicago Tea Party to protest government intervention in the housing market. The five-minute clip (youtu.be/bEZB4taSEoA) became an Internet sensation, and the “Tea Party” rallying cry struck a chord with those who had already seen billions of dollars flow toward sagging financial firms.  An unplanned movement was begun that day because one person spoke the their mind and said things that everyone else was already feeling.

So, what’s your “Jerry Maguire” moment?  Let’s apply that to our career and make it personal.  Is it to stop looking at Instagram comments and likes as what defines your ability?  Is it to finally confront your fears about the future and which move you should make next and to just make the first step?  Is it to find happiness in the pursuit of the career you love, even though you’re not doing it yet?  For those that have made it, is it to pass that passion on to others by mentoring the next generation?  OR- is it the grand decision to make that film or start that studio that will create the films you loved from the past with new stories for the audiences of the future?  Small or large, grasp the moments when they come and make decisions that will change your life.

Lastly, as Jerry’s mentor, Dicky Fox says at the end of “Jerry Maguire”:  “ Hey, I don’t have all the answers…In life, to be honest, I’ve failed as much as I’ve succeeded.  But- I love my wife, I love my life, and I wish YOU my kind of success.”
